Have you ever felt like your happiness depended on someone else? Maybe you thought, "If only they would change, I could be happy." Many people feel this way, especially if they have a loved one who struggles with alcohol. It’s easy to believe that if someone else acted differently, life would be better. But the truth is, happiness comes from inside us, not from what other people do.

Happiness Is Your Own Choice

Life is full of ups and downs. Some days feel great, while others feel hard. If we let other people control our happiness, we will always feel like we are on a rollercoaster. When they are kind, we feel good. When they make mistakes, we feel bad. That’s why it is so important to take responsibility for our own happiness.

But how do we do that? If we have spent a long time worrying about someone else’s actions, it can be hard to change. This is where Al-Anon and a higher power can help.

How Al-Anon Teaches Us to Find Peace

Al-Anon is a support group for people who have been affected by someone else’s drinking. It helps people understand that they cannot control another person’s choices. No matter how much we want someone to stop drinking, we cannot make that decision for them.

Instead, Al-Anon teaches that we can control only ourselves. We can choose how we react to things. We can choose to take care of ourselves, set healthy boundaries, and find joy in our own lives. Al-Anon helps people see that happiness is something we create, not something we get from others.

One of the most important lessons in Al-Anon is to “Let go and let God.” This means we stop trying to control others and instead trust in a higher power.

Finding Strength in a Higher Power

A higher power can mean different things to different people. Some people call their higher power God. Others think of it as the universe, nature, or a guiding spirit. The important part is knowing that we are not alone.

When we believe in a higher power, we learn to let go of the things we cannot control. We stop expecting other people to make us happy, and we start looking for peace within ourselves. Instead of blaming others for our struggles, we ask a higher power for strength and guidance.

Prayer and meditation can help with this. When we take time to pray or sit quietly, we remind ourselves that happiness comes from within. We learn to trust that everything will be okay, even if other people don’t change.

Steps to Take Responsibility for Your Happiness

If you want to take control of your happiness, here are some steps to try:

  1. Stop Blaming Others – Other people will make mistakes, but they do not control your happiness. Only you can decide how you feel.

  2. Let Go of What You Can’t Control – You can’t control other people’s choices, but you can control your own.

  3. Find Strength in a Higher Power – Trust that a higher power is guiding you. You are never alone.

  4. Take Care of Yourself – Do things that make you happy. Read, take a walk, listen to music, or spend time with kind people.

  5. Practice Gratitude – Every day, think about at least one thing you are thankful for. This helps shift your focus to the good in life.

  6. Join a Support Group – Al-Anon meetings are a great place to find encouragement and wisdom from others who understand what you’re going through.

You Deserve to Be Happy

No matter what is happening around you, you deserve happiness. You do not have to wait for someone else to change before you start enjoying your life. You have the power to find peace and joy, no matter what.

Through Al-Anon and a higher power, many people have learned this lesson. They have found that happiness is not something other people can give them—it is something they create within themselves.

So take responsibility for your happiness today. Trust in a higher power, let go of what you can’t control, and focus on the good in your life. When you do this, you will feel lighter, stronger, and truly happy from the inside out.
