One Small Step to Walk with God

Writer: Sober AA MemberSober AA Member

Every day, we make choices. Some choices are small, like what to eat for breakfast. Others are bigger, like how we treat people or what we say when we are upset. Each decision shapes our lives and the way others see us.

As followers of God, we want our lives to reflect His love and grace. We want people to see kindness, patience, and truth when they look at us. But sometimes, it feels hard to know where to start. The good news is that we don’t have to change everything at once. We only need to take one deliberate action—a small, intentional step—to bring our thoughts, words, or choices closer to God’s example.

Choosing One Small Step

Think about your daily life. Is there a moment when you feel impatient or unkind? Do you sometimes say words that hurt instead of heal? Are there times when fear or doubt take over your thoughts?

Now, imagine changing just one thing. Maybe today, instead of rushing past someone in need, you stop and help. Maybe you choose to say something kind to a friend or family member. Maybe you replace a negative thought with a prayer.

Taking one small step might not seem like much, but little steps lead to big changes.

Aligning Your Thoughts with God

What we think shapes how we live. If we fill our minds with anger, fear, or worry, our actions will follow. But if we fill our minds with God’s truth, we will act with love, faith, and peace.

Try this: The next time you feel anxious or upset, take a deep breath and say a simple prayer.

Ask God to guide your thoughts. Instead of focusing on what is wrong, think about His promises. The Bible reminds us in Philippians 4:8 to think about things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. When we do this, our hearts change, and so do our actions.

Aligning Your Words with God

Words are powerful. They can lift someone up or tear them down. Jesus used words to teach, heal, and show love. We can do the same.

Today, try to speak with kindness and honesty. Instead of complaining, say something positive. Instead of gossiping, say something encouraging. If you make a mistake and say something hurtful, don’t be afraid to apologize. God’s grace allows us to try again.

A simple way to check your words is to ask: Would I say this if God was standing next to me? If the answer is no, consider changing your words.

Aligning Your Choices with God

Every day, we make choices that reflect what we believe. Some choices are easy, while others take courage.

If you see someone being treated unfairly, stand up for them. If you have a chance to help someone in need, take it. If you feel tempted to do something you know is wrong, ask God for strength to walk away.

Living like your Higher Power would want you to live doesn’t mean being perfect—it means trying to show His love in everything we do.

Your Life as a Light

When we take small steps to follow God, our lives begin to shine. People notice our kindness, patience, and faith. They see something different in us—something good.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Our actions should point people to God.

Today, take one deliberate action to align your life with His example. It could be a thought, a word, or a choice. No step is too small. As you walk this path, may your life reveal His love and grace to those around you.
