Life is loud. Everywhere we turn, there are voices telling us what to do, what to believe, and how to live. The world is full of distractions—worries, opinions, and endless demands. I used to listen to that noise. It kept me busy, stressed, and confused. But through God and the 12 Steps, I learned that if I want to hear God’s voice, I have to tune out the world and focus on serving Him.
The Noise That Drowns Out God
For years, I let the world’s noise control me. I listened to my fears, the opinions of others, and the expectations society placed on me. I worried about money, relationships, and things I couldn’t control. My mind was so full of worry that I had no room to hear God’s gentle voice.
Step One of the 12 Steps helped me admit that my life was unmanageable. I needed God to take over. But how could I follow Him if I couldn’t even hear Him?
Learning to Listen
Step Two and Step Three showed me that I had to surrender. I had to trust that God had a plan for me and that His way was better than mine. But to follow Him, I needed to listen.
My sponsor taught me a simple but powerful truth: God speaks in stillness. He doesn’t shout over the noise of the world. He whispers to our hearts. If I wanted to hear Him, I had to be still.
I started setting aside quiet time each day—time to pray, to read His Word, and to simply sit in silence. At first, it was hard. My mind raced with thoughts. But the more I practiced, the more I began to feel God’s presence.
Serving Instead of Struggling
The 12 Steps also taught me that I hear God best when I serve Him. Step Twelve reminds us to carry the message to others. I used to think I had to do something big to serve God. But my sponsor helped me see that small acts of kindness matter.
I began to focus on serving in simple ways:
Listening to someone who needed encouragement instead of rushing to give advice.
Praying for others instead of worrying about my own problems.
Showing up for my home group and sharing my experience, strength, and hope.
Trusting God to guide my actions instead of trying to control everything.
The more I served, the more clearly I heard God. He showed me where to go, who to help, and how to love others.
Blocking Out the Noise
The world’s noise hasn’t disappeared. There are still distractions, temptations, and fears. But now, I know how to block them out.
I start my day with prayer instead of social media.
I turn to God’s Word instead of the opinions of others.
I trust God’s plan instead of stressing over things I can’t control.
I focus on serving instead of seeking approval.
God’s Voice is Clear
Now, I hear God more than ever. He speaks through His Word, through the people He places in my life, and through the peace I feel when I follow Him.
If you feel lost in the noise of the world, take a step back. Find stillness. Spend time with God. Focus on serving Him in whatever way He directs. The world’s noise will always be there, but God’s voice is stronger—if we choose to listen.
