How Al-Anon Helped Me Learn to Become a Helper of Hearts

Writer: Sober AA MemberSober AA Member

In my journey with Al-Anon, I discovered a powerful truth: when you choose to help others, wisdom begins to flow from your heart like a bubbling spring. Al-Anon taught me valuable lessons about empathy, support, and understanding. Here’s how it changed my life:

Al-Anon is a community where people gather to support each other when their loved ones struggle with alcoholism. At first, I felt alone and confused, unsure of how to help or even how to cope. But being part of Al-Anon showed me that I wasn’t alone. I learned that by sharing my experiences and listening to others, I could offer support and comfort.

One of the most important lessons I learned in Al-Anon is the power of empathy. Empathy means understanding and sharing the feelings of others. When I listened to others’ stories and shared my own, I realized that we all face challenges and struggles. By showing empathy, I could connect with others on a deeper level and offer genuine support.

Another valuable lesson from Al-Anon is the importance of self-care. I learned that taking care of myself allows me to better support others. This means setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, and seeking help when I need it. By taking care of myself, I can be a stronger and more effective helper of hearts.

Al-Anon also taught me about the power of community. Being part of a supportive community helped me feel understood and valued. I learned that we are stronger together, and that by sharing our experiences and supporting each other, we can make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Finally, Al-Anon taught me that wisdom comes from the heart. When I choose to help others with kindness and compassion, wisdom flows naturally. I learned that being a helper of hearts means offering support without judgment, listening with empathy, and sharing wisdom gained from my own experiences.

Al-Anon has taught me valuable lessons about empathy, self-care, community, and the power of wisdom. By becoming a helper of hearts, I have discovered that true wisdom flows from the heart when you choose to support and care for others. With the help of a sponsor and the 12 steps I learned to be happy, joyous and free and out of self.

God bless you - you gottawanna move forward, stop looking backwards. Enjoy your journey.
